BMEX 2013 - High Fashion For Life
Published on June 18, 2013 by admin

The team of John Hunte and Adzil Stuart will once again rock the fashion runway at BMEX 2013 – An Explosion of Bajan Spirit. Always an annual crowd pleaser, this year’s fashion shows will be held nightly in the Furniture & Design Pavilion at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre from June 28th – 30th. Now in its seventh year with John Hunte and Adzil Stuart as its producers, it will be and All-Star year featuring some of the fashion and accessories designers and models that have emerged through this process.

This year’s show will feature some of the designers who have continued to show at BMEX over the last seven years; these include young designers like SHAKAD and ANDREW HARRIS, stalwarts like Pat Brathwaite and ready-to-wear t-shirt designers such as GRAFIKAL. This year we are pleased to welcome back Chenique Jones, following her first showing at BMEX last year. A hit in 2012, this Combermere graduate returns from her first-year studies in fashion in the UK to bring another collection for her discerning fans.

In another of BMEX’s firsts, the latest crop of Barbados Community College (BCC) Associate Degree graduates in Fashion will showcase their talent at this year’s show.  Their first appearance will be a teaser at the Expo’s Opening Ceremony on the morning of Friday June 28th. Then on June 30, their Portfolio collections will be a central feature of the Expo.

Included in this showing will be the work of Taleah Prescod whose collection is entitled Volcanic Activity. Inspired by smoke, lava, volcanic lightning and rock this collection targets young women between the ages of 18-25. It is a casual collection which features asymmetrical designs with various cut outs. Black, different shades of grey and orange are all of the colours used in this collection.

Sarah-Joy Jones’ collection “Paint Me Over” will also be featured.  This casual wear collection was inspired by Modern art particularly in the genre of Colour Field Painting which features vast fields of rich colour stained onto a canvas. Mark Rothko’s large colour stained canvases and Morris Louis’ waterfall of colours were the main inspiration for this collection. Grungy, torn and tattered paint splattered t-shirts, aprons and trousers are thrown away in favour of a sleek modern silhouette featuring dresses with asymmetrical cuts, soft draping and fashionable separates all hand-painted in the colours of sun yellow, chartreuse, turquoise, ultramarine and magenta all flowing into one another. So whether you are 18 or 35, this collection is sure to bring out the artist in you.

The BMA is proud to celebrate the fact that BMEX introduced stars like Antonio Cumberbatch and Alexis Campbell both of whom have shown at BMEX Fashion shows. Added to the BCC portfolio, the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic students will present their first- and second-year fashions throughout the weekend.

Another key aspect of the BMEX Fashion portfolio is the development of Models. Through a truly innovative strategy, young students benefit from work-training under the realistic conditions of the fashion shows. Each year the Expo develops and exposes a hand-picked crop of talent, several of whom go on to have fruitful careers.

According to John Hunte “We are extremely pleased to be working with this talented cadre of designers.  These are people who have experienced BMEX, reaped the benefits of the exposure in many regards and now we are able to pull many of them together for a unique showing. The models have also been working quite hard and we are pleased with the growth and development of those who will be on stage this year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the BIDC for the use of their properties both at the Bagnall Point Gallery and at Pelican and to thank all of the students who participated in the training programme, especially the finalists from the various model search competitions held by several secondary schools over the past year.

“And while many see the show and enjoy it, not enough recognition is given to the team who make it all happen behind the scenes, and so I would also like to recognise Raymond Harper, Dawn-Lisa Smith, Christopher Smith, Georgina Callender, I-Heart Make-up, Troy Forde, Maureen Dottin, Cedric Mayers, Shernell Jordan, Patsy Grannum, Tasha Mayers, Sherryanne Moore, Kim Jones, Selwyne Browne, Ian Gajadhar, Wayne Simmons, and Dabian Cumberbatch.  BMEX 2013 will truly be an Explosion of Bajan Spirit.” Hunte concluded
