Antonio “Posh Punk” Cumberbatch
Published on February 17, 2011 by BMEX
The mission of every designer is to launch an international career and make a huge impact on the world of fashion.  Our very own Antonio “Posh Punk” Cumberbatch is well on his way to realising that dream.

As the Barbadian designer-to-watch, he has gathered more acclaim in his brief introduction than many established designers. His charismatic personality, his dedication and passion to realising his dream as an international fashion designer will inspire others to do the same; thus setting him apart as a role model for many.

Antonio is well known to BMEX. He launched his line Posh Punk at BMEX in 2005, received international acclaim that same year at Caribbean Fashion Week (CFW) in Jamaica and again at CFW in 2006 and 2007. By 2008, he was en route to further his training in Florence, Italy and was also part of BIDC Portfolio Project titled Fashion Forward.

In 2005 Antonio made a bold declaration to Kingsley Cooper of Pulse, that his Barbados Community College (BCC) final year Portfolio line was ready for the Caribbean Fashion Week runway; the rest is history

At only 18 years old, as a BCC student, Antonio was able to take his Posh Punk designs to the prestigious Caribbean Fashion Week and wow audiences enough to garner much praise and press coverage. In Jamaica this new collection opened CFW on June 9, 2006 capturing the attention of the fashionistas.  His work has been on an upward spiral since then.

On Sunday May 23, Antonio Cumberbatch is slated to address the design community at BMEX 2010. As Barbados leading designer to “break the ceiling” for international recognition as a contemporary designer from the Caribbean, what he has to say would offer valuable insight to the local community. This event is open to all designers and design students, catering to an optimum number of 50 people.  He will also be the featured designer at BMEX, showcasing his highly anticipated final-year line, in the BMEX 2010 Fashion Pavilion on Monday, May 24th.

While Antonio has yet to fully launch his career as a designer internationally, he has set a foundation as the Barbadian designer to watch. From his debut at BMEX as a new graduate of the BCC Design programme he catapulted into the regional and international fashion media with his signature Posh Punk. Now since studying in Florence Italy, his work has turned a corner. Even as a student he has been awarded as finalist in national competitions in Italy and has interned with design houses in Italy and the UK. A lot is expected of him as he charts his course beyond graduate school to apprentice with prestigious design houses in Italy in a bid to emerge as a top international designer from Barbados.
Check out the daily fashion shows at BMEX 2010, coming to the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre every evening this weekend Saturday through Monday. BMEX 2010 will be open to the public from May 22 - 24th. 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
