What's Happening

The halls of the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre will undoubtedly be a hive of activity May 21st to 24th as the Barbados Manufacturers Association (BMA) hosts its flagship Exhibition BMEX 2010.  The excitement, however, starts long before you enter the pavilions on the inside as the exhibits on the Grounds deliver their own stimulation and inspiration to the BMEX experience.

4hYoung Barbadians have been avid members of the local arm of the international 4-H Club organization for many years.  The mission of this club is "engaging youth to reach their fullest potential while advancing the field of youth development."  The name represents four personal development areas of focus for the organization: Head, Heart, Hands, and Health.

From ages five to nineteen the goal of 4-H is to develop leadership and life skills of young people through mostly experiential learning programs. Although typically thought to be an agriculturally focused organization; 4-H today focuses on good citizenship, healthy living, science, engineering and technology programs.

The 4-H motto is "To make the best better", and its slogan is "Learn by doing" ; and that is what retired school teacher Margaret Headley is seeking to achieve in the Three Stars 4-H Club based in St. Philip.  Every Sunday afternoon 16 young 4-H-ers gather to cultivate, grow, bake, and engage in various craft activities.  These efforts are not in vain as the group proudly showcased their exploits at the recently held Agrofest Expo. They captured first prize for Best Potted Plants, Vegetables and Bakery. The group is geared up and eagerly anticipating the public’s response when they bring their produce to market at BMEX 2010.

In addition to appliquéd T-shirts, the group will offer the public a wide range of herbs and vegetables including sweet basil, mint, parsley, beans, Chinese cabbage, a variety of hot and sweet peppers, eggplant, garlic and a whole lot more. To the public this young club is proudly demonstrating what is possible when young hearts in good health put their heads and hands together – wholesome development and resounding success.

Also on the BMEX 2010 Grounds will be L & N Workshop Inc. a metal fabrication company in the vein of its Predecessor ACME Manufacturing Ltd. The company is a service provider for the Transport Board offering general refurbishment of their buses ranging from roof & floor replacement to complete bodywork & structural work on the bus bodies as well as painting and panel replacements.

L&N fabricates boxes for delivery trucks as well as trays and canteens built to custom specifications to suit their customers’ needs. They also have a bodywork section that services the needs of both commercial & private clientele.

One of the company’s most recent achievements is the construction of a Minibus completely fabricated right here in Barbados, and this will be proudly on display at BMEX 2010 – fully manufactured in Barbados!

The company commenced operations seven years ago on the closure of ACME Manufacturing Limited. Currently operating in the same space that ACME once occupied, the company has had to overcome numerous challenges to survive.  They however feel that their determination is paying off as they rise to prominence through the hard work & dedication of Mr. Norman Edwards & his loyal staff.  The company believes that it has been Mr. Edwards’ commitment to quality work and fair pricing that has distinguished L & N Workshop Inc. as something special within the market. He also takes a strong stance on ensuring equal opportunity for all members of staff regardless of their qualifications.

According to Edwards, “Patrons to BMEX 2010 can expect to see Bajan manufacturing and workmanship at it's best in a range of products that all Barbadians can take pride in knowing they are manufactured right here in Bim.”
Look out for L & N Workshop Inc in Booth # 10 on the outside and booth # 69 on the inside.

Patrons can also look out for June Knight and Company, the National Conservation Commission, Chickmont Foods, Davis Plant Nurseries, All Round Cleaning Solutions Limited, Eden Nurseries, Alicia Clarke and Marcia Hinckson.  See you there.
