History & Passion - That’s Mount Gay Rum
Published on May 11, 2010 by BMEX
Its journey since 1703 has earned Mount Gay Rum the right to be called Our Rum. Rum is woven into the social fabric of our society and so it is therefore no surprise that The Charter of Barbados was signed at the Mermaid Tavern in Oistins, back in 1629. The first small-scale distilleries landed on the island around 1637 but it took a few years before we saw regular distillation and the birth of the world’s oldest Rum - Mount Gay.

Whether it’s a mega event, family occasion or BMEX 2010, Mount Gay Rum is there. After a brief hiatus, Mount Gay stomped the BMEX stage in 2009 demonstrating the strength, versatility and power of the brand with the launch of the Mount Gay Rum Lounge.

Updating us on what we can expect at BMEX 2010 spokesperson for the Brand, Marc McCollin advised “As ‘The Rum That Invented Rum’ we want to give the BMEX 2010 patrons a true Mount Gay Rum experience so we will once again bring back the Mount Gay Rum Lounge.”

“In the lounge guests will receive a bit of history of the brand and most importantly the opportunity to taste the brand! Not only will persons have the opportunity to savour the portfolio of rums available within the Mount Gay range which includes Mount Gay Eclipse, Mount Gay Eclipse Silver, Mount Gay Sugar Cane Brandy and Mount Gay Extra Old but they will also be sampling some great Mount Gay Rum cocktails created by the Mount Gay Rum International Brand Ambassador Chesterfield Browne. To this end, amidst the hustle and bustle of BMEX 2010, we invite persons to come into the lounge, take a load off, enjoy a cocktail and feel proud to call this wonderful product, - Mount Gay Rum - which is enjoyed in over 70 countries worldwide; their own!” McCollin concluded.

Commenting on Mount Gay’s presence at BMEX Executive Director of the BMA Bobbi McKay explained “Mount Gay Rum with 300 years of rich Barbadian history demonstrates the passion and stability of local manufacturing. The brand has build up a reputation for quality and consistency and in this respect is a role model for local manufacturing. It is a major exporter and consequently contributes significantly as a foreign exchange earner. We believe that there are several best practices which can be learnt from this organisation and continually we are encouraging organisations to develop partnerships and share best practices which will facilitate the growth and strengthening of the sector as a whole. The beauty of BMEX is that it is platform for experienced international brands like Mount Gay while at the same time it is also the launching pad from many vibrant, innovative young businesses.“

“That’s what makes BMEX great; patrons can see what well-known brands have to offer and some of the latest developments in the various sectors; while at the same time they also get to see the fresh new talent which is developing locally.” Ms. McKay concluded
